Honors & Accelerated Pathways in Math for
Folsom Middle School & Sutter Middle School
For 2024-25 School Year:
Placement for incoming sixth grade students into Course 1 Honors:
Students are automatically placed in Course 1 Honors if all 3 criteria listed below are met:

Grades of As for the most recent two consecutive grading periods

CAASPP Overall Level 4 (Standards Exceeded) from 2023-2024 (last school year)- Levels are posted in PowerSchool under “Score Reports.”

Renaissance Scaled Score at Level 4
* Current 5th grade students who are enrolled in the Theodore Judah Elementary(TJE) Academy for Advanced Learning will be automatically placed in Course 2 Honors in the following school year, if all the above 3 criteria are met AND if they pass the TJE Academy Course 1 Final (which will be given at the end of the school year) with an 80% or higher.
For current 6thgrade Course 1 students who wish to be placed in Course 2 Honors in the following school year (2025-26):
Students are placed in Course 2 Honors if all 3 criteria listed below are met:

CAASPP Overall Level of 4 (Standards Exceeded) from 2024-2025 (this school year)

Renaissance Scaled Score at Level 4 (If unsure of their level, students may check with their current math teacher)
*If these eligible students do not wish to take the Honors Pathway, they will be placed in Course 2 for the next school year.
*Students who qualify for Honors and Accelerated pathways will be placed on a waitlist if these classes are full.
*Students who are placed in the Honors and Accelerated pathways will be encouraged to follow the Grade Level pathway if a minimum of 80% is not maintained in both the semesters.
For Current 5th Grade students who wish to challenge Course 1 Honors held at the end of this school year (2024-25):
Students are invited to take the challenge test if all 3 criteria listed below are met:

CAASPP Overall Level of 4 (Standards Exceeded) from 2023-2024(last school year)- Level is posted in PowerSchool “Score Reports.”

Renaissance Scaled Score at Level 4 (If unsure of their level, students may check with their current math teacher)
*Students must earn a minimum score of 80% in the challenge test in order to be placed in Course 2 Honors in the following school year.
*The challenge test for Course 1 Honors for qualifying current fifth graders from FCUSD (incoming sixth graders at FMS next school year ) is offered at their elementary schools at the end of their fifth grade; results of this test are notified by the district to the elementary schools. FMS will not be conducting this test and therefore not be releasing the results.
For current 7th grade Course 2 students who wish to challenge Course 3 in order to be placed in Integrated Math I(IM1) in the following school year(2025-26):
Students are placed in IM1 if all 4 criteria listed below are met:

CAASPP Overall Level of 4 (Standards Exceeded) from 2023-2024 (last school year)- Level is posted in PowerSchool “Score Reports.”

Renaissance Scaled Score at Level 4 (If unsure of their level, students may check with their current math teacher)

Passed the Course 3 Challenge Test with an 80 % or higher.
*Current Course 2 students who do not wish to challenge Course 3 will be placed in Course 3 in the next school year.
*Students who are eligible and interested in challenging IM1 or IM2 must earn a minimum of 80% in the high school challenge test (that will be provided at FMS on Challenge Test day) in order to be placed in the next course of the Integrated Math series.
*Current 8th Grade students who wish to challenge the next math course need to reach out to the counseling department of the high school that they enroll in.
*Challenge tests for Course 2 Honors, Course 3, Integrated Math 1(IM1) and Integrated Math 2(IM2) are offered at FMS for qualifying students who are currently enrolled at FMS.
*Challenge Test for Integrated Math 2 (IM2) is only offered to current qualifying 7th graders of FMS.
Other Details of the Math Challenge Test

This test is offered ONCE a school year, closer to the end of the second semester.

In an academic school year, students may attempt ONLY ONE challenge test in chronological order shown in the math flowchart.

Practice tests or study guides for the challenge tests are not offered by FMS or by the district.

Students who wish to challenge a course must meet all the criteria specified for that course.

Students who meet the requirements to take the challenge test must register during the sign-up period. There will be no exceptions.

Makeups and retakes of challenge tests will not be offered.

The parents/guardians of the students who take the test will be notified of the results by email. The score obtained on the test or the answer sheet will not be released to the students or parents.
