Syllabus and Grading Policy

Physical Education Syllabus

GRADING POLICY

Your grade in Physical Education will be 100% Standards based.  Each standard taught will be assessed on the following 4 point rubric:

4 = Mastery of standard

3 = Meets Standard

2 = Approaching standard

1 = Does not meet standard

0 = Did not attempt

Grades are based and weighted in these three categories:

Standard 3 = 50%

Summative Assessment = 30%

Jagfit (weekly workouts) = 20%

What do the scores on the 4.0 Scale mean?

The scores on the 4.0 Scale each have a very specific meaning. They are:

Exemplary 4.0: The student demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the standards by completing exemplary applications of the material.  Students at this level can make connections about materials that are not explicitly “taught” in the class.  This student is capable of “teaching” a concept to his or her peers.

PROFICIENT 3.0: The student has mastered the complex, targeted knowledge and skills for the class. Students at this level have a very sound understanding of the standards as taught in the class but have not necessarily made inter-content-specific connections.

Approaching 2.0: The student understands the foundational standards that support the targeted learning, but is still working to master the complex material for the class. Students can recall facts and perhaps solve basic problems by replicating solutions seen in their notes.

Struggling 1.0: The student is able to demonstrate an understanding of the foundational standards for the class with help from the teacher, but still struggles when working independently.

Students will be assessed using Standards-Based Rubrics on the following standards:

Standard 1 Movement SkillsStudents will be asked to participate in various activities and will be assessed formatively on their skill during game play, skill practice, as well as warm-ups and cardiovascular activities. Students are encouraged to participate to the best of their ability and will be graded based on skill level and improvement.

Standard 2 Movement Knowledge: Students will be given summative assessments based on their knowledge of health-related fitness concepts as well as rules, strategy and history of various physical activities. Knowledge will be assessed through written assignments, written test or projects. An exam will follow each unit and a written assignment will be assigned for each unit. Students are expected to review materials posted on Google Classroom and come prepared for class.

Standard 3 Fitness Skills: Students will be asked to demonstrate their ability to participate in Health-related skills, Fitness testing, Cardio Runs, and Plyometric drills.

Standard 4 Fitness Knowledge: Students will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of health-related concepts, skill-related concepts, creating fitness goals, analyzing and understanding data, and developing a fitness and nutrition plan.

Standard 5 Social DevelopmentStudents demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity. This grade is based on the student’s ability to behave responsibly and respectfully by working well with others, accepting individual differences, and respecting others.
