Wrestling

Head Coach: Tom Ward
Assistant Coach: Ney Vencer
Assistant Coach: Jack Navarrette
Hello, my name is Tom Ward, and I have had the privilege of serving as the Wrestling Coach at Folsom Middle School for over 30 years. Throughout my career, I have poured my heart and soul into the sport, driven by a passion for not only teaching wrestling techniques but also fostering personal growth in every athlete I work with.
Wrestling has been a significant part of my life from an early age. I started my own journey on the mat in my youth, and the lessons I learned during those formative years—about discipline, perseverance, and teamwork—have remained with me ever since. I believe these principles are essential for success both in and out of the sport, and I strive to instill them in my students.
My coaching philosophy is rooted in creating a supportive and encouraging environment, where each athlete is empowered to push their limits and reach their full potential. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to coach a diverse group of young wrestlers, each bringing their unique strengths and challenges to the mat. I relish in watching them grow not only as athletes but also as individuals, developing confidence and resilience along the way.
In my tenure at Folsom Middle School, I have implemented various training programs that cater to different skill levels, ensuring that every wrestler, whether a beginner or an experienced competitor, finds their place and feels motivated. I emphasize the importance of building a strong foundation in technique and physical conditioning while also encouraging strategic thinking during matches. The thrill of competition is something I cherish, and I work diligently to prepare my wrestlers for the challenges they will face on the mat.
My commitment goes beyond just coaching. I am deeply invested in building a sense of community within our wrestling program. I believe that fostering strong relationships among team members and creating a positive team culture are crucial to our success. I actively engage with parents, encouraging their involvement and support, as I see them as vital partners in our athletes' journeys.
Throughout my coaching career, I have witnessed countless transformations—both on the mat and in the lives of my wrestlers. I have seen shy, hesitant young athletes blossom into confident competitors who take pride in their achievements. I take immense satisfaction in knowing that I have played a part in shaping their experiences and aiding in their personal development.
As I reflect on my journey as a coach, I am filled with gratitude for the many friendships I have made and the lessons I have learned from my athletes. Wrestling is more than a sport to me; it is a way of life that has taught me the values of dedication, respect, and the pursuit of excellence. I look forward to many more years of coaching at Folsom Middle School, mentoring the next generation of wrestlers, and continuing to foster a love for the sport that has given me so much.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about my journey. I am excited for the future and all the potential it holds for our wrestling program.
